The House of Representatives approved a significant defense policy bill this Thursday morning, paving the way for President Joe Biden to authorize $886 billion in spending. This funding will cover military pay increases, aid for Ukraine, and several other critical issues.

Known as the National Defense Authorization Act, this essential bill is an annual requirement for Congress. It encompasses a 5.2% salary increase for military personnel, allocates funds for Ukraine, and extends a contentious foreign surveillance program. The bill's approval follows a rapid effort by Congress to finalize this key piece of legislation, which passed the House with a bipartisan vote of 310-118.

Despite opposition from conservative members of the House, the bill was processed under a procedure known as "suspension." This approach necessitated a two-thirds majority vote in the House to bypass procedural obstacles, which would likely have faced opposition from staunch conservative GOP legislators.

Engineered immune cells have provided a new lease on life for 15 individuals suffering from debilitating autoimmune disorders. These individuals are now experiencing relief from fresh symptoms and the need for ongoing treatments. This groundbreaking approach, known as CAR-T-cell therapy, has sparked hope that it could one day be applied to a wide range of conditions caused by rogue immune cells producing antibodies against the body's own tissues.

As of the recent data presented on December 9th at the American Society of Hematology meeting in San Diego, California, all 15 participants, each diagnosed with one of three different autoimmune conditions, have either remained completely disease-free or have seen a significant reduction in their symptoms since undergoing treatment. Remarkably, the first participants received this innovative therapy more than two years ago.

These initial results, while still in the early stages, have generated tremendous enthusiasm within the medical community. Marco Ruella, an oncologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, expressed the excitement surrounding this breakthrough, stating, "We're all excited. There's a lot of potential."

Former President Trump has filed an appeal against an order issued by Judge Chutkan. This order had previously denied Trump's motion to dismiss the Jan. 6 case. Additionally, Trump is requesting that all proceedings in the case be suspended while his appeal is underway.

This move by Trump is part of his ongoing legal efforts to have the case against him dismissed. He is arguing for the dismissal on two key grounds. First, he is invoking the concept of presidential immunity, suggesting that as a former president, he should be protected from legal actions related to his time in office. Secondly, Trump is relying on constitutional arguments, particularly citing the First Amendment as a basis for dismissing the case.
