The European Court of Human Rights declared that nations must mitigate greenhouse gas emissions to shield individuals from climate change impacts. This landmark judgment stands as the inaugural success in international climate litigation. This verdict now serves as a legal benchmark for climate-related legal actions within the 46 member countries of the Council of Europe, including the 27 member states of the EU.

A group known as Senior Women for Climate Protection, comprised mainly of women in their 70s, contended that their particular age and gender heightened their susceptibility to the detrimental effects of extreme heat, a consequence of climate change. They argued that Switzerland's insufficient emission control measures breached their human rights. The ECHR found Switzerland's actions to curb emissions wanting and pinpointed considerable lapses in regulation. Switzerland is now tasked with devising strategies to meet its climate obligations effectively.

Conversely, the court dismissed analogous lawsuits filed by six young Portuguese activists and a past mayor from France, attributing the rejections to procedural discrepancies and the absence of territorial jurisdiction. These rulings align with recent data indicating that March marked the tenth consecutive month to record unprecedented high temperatures.

Yesterday, the parents of the perpetrator responsible for the Oxford High School shooting were each handed a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 15 years for neglecting to prevent their son's violent act at the Michigan school in November 2021, where he killed four students and injured seven. This case marks an unprecedented conviction of a shooter's parents in the context of a mass school shooting in the United States.

Jennifer and James Crumbley faced convictions on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, judged in distinct trials earlier this year. The prosecution highlighted their severe neglect in recognizing the imminent threat posed by their son, emphasizing apparent signs of his mental distress and aggressive inclinations, which were notably evident during a meeting with school authorities on the day of the tragedy. The weapon used in the shooting, a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, was a recent gift from his father.

The adolescent perpetrator admitted guilt to the charges against him and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole in December.

Manchester City, having achieved a historic treble, now holds the European champions' title following a triumphant campaign led by Pep Guardiola and star player Erling Haaland last June.

The team is currently viewed as the favorite to clinch the Champions League title once more, with their recent advancement to the quarterfinals underscored by a dominant 6-2 aggregate victory over Copenhagen in the Round of 16. Other football heavyweights like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also secured their quarterfinal spots, albeit with varying levels of challenge against RB Leipzig and Real Sociedad, respectively. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich has smoothly progressed to the next round after decisively overcoming Lazio.
