Iran initiated an unprecedented assault from its territory by launching approximately 300 missiles and armed drones targeting Israel. The sophisticated defense systems of Israel, the UK, the US, and France successfully intercepted 99% of these, with Jordan also intercepting missiles that crossed its airspace. Despite these efforts, five projectiles breached Israeli defenses, resulting in injuries including to a 7-year-old girl within Israel.

This aggressive act by Iran was in response to a recent Israeli airstrike that resulted in the deaths of three high-ranking Iranian generals and four officers at a consular building in Syria. The longstanding hostilities between Iran and Israel have frequently involved indirect engagements through proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hamas in Gaza, and various militias in Iraq and Syria, rather than confrontations.

The global response was largely critical of the Iranian action. President Joe Biden, emphasizing diplomacy, stated that the US would not retaliate militarily against Iran. Meanwhile, the situation remains tense as Israel exchanges fire with Hezbollah across the Lebanese border and contends with the seizure of a ship linked to Israel by Iran. Israel has declared its intention to choose its timing and method for responding to these provocations.

The attacker was subsequently shot and killed by a responding police officer.

Authorities in New South Wales confirmed on Sunday that Cauchi had a documented history of mental illness. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have indicated that they do not believe the attack was related to terrorism.
