Buckingham Palace revealed yesterday that King Charles III is undergoing treatment for cancer. The palace did not provide details on the type or stage of the disease but confirmed that the 75-year-old monarch has started undergoing regular treatment sessions. The diagnosis came about during treatment for a benign enlarged prostate, with the palace clarifying that the cancer is not related to his prostate.

During his treatment period, the king will scale back on public appearances but intends to maintain his duties as the head of state. This includes his responsibilities such as signing legislation and conducting other governmental affairs. Should the king be unable to fulfill his official roles, counselors of state, including Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward, are prepared to act in his stead. Notably, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, who are technically counselors of state, are ineligible due to their withdrawal from royal responsibilities.

Furthermore, it has been disclosed that Prince William, who had briefly stepped back from his public duties to care for his wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, following her abdominal surgery, is set to resume his engagements this week.

Southern California experienced unprecedented rainfall due to a second atmospheric river hitting the region within four days, starting late Sunday into Monday. The rainfall in certain parts of the state surpassed the annual average in just a single day.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California issued an emergency declaration for eight counties stretching from Santa Barbara to San Diego on Monday, in response to the severe flash floods and mudslides that impeded roadways. The greater Los Angeles region recorded between 4 to 6 inches of rain, with some locales receiving over 10 inches, prompting temporary mandatory evacuation orders in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Additionally, the storm impacted ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada by depositing several feet of snow, with further snowfall anticipated throughout the middle of the week.

Atmospheric rivers during the winter months are known to contribute nearly half of the annual precipitation to the West Coast.
