This week, the West Coast of the United States is bracing for an intense weather event known as an atmospheric river, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, impacting millions. This particular weather system referred to as a "Pineapple Express" due to its Hawaiian origins, stretches over 3,000 miles. It's anticipated to move southward from British Columbia, Canada, reaching Northern California today and extending to Southern California by tomorrow, before progressing towards Arizona over the weekend.

A Pineapple Express is capable of delivering up to 5 inches of rain in California within a day, and some coastal regions are predicted to receive more than 8 inches over the week. In higher terrain areas, such as the Sierra Nevada, there is a possibility of 1-3 feet of snowfall. Additionally, there is a forecast for a second atmospheric river storm, which could hit California by Sunday, aligning with the Grammy Awards weekend, and continue into the early part of next week.

Despite the severity of these storms, officials have assured the public that there is no current risk of a megaflood, an event not seen since 1861, which lasted 45 days and resulted in the formation of a lake in California's Central Valley.
