Yesterday marked the start of the trial for the mother of the individual responsible for the Oxford High School shooting, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. This is the first instance in the United States where a school shooter's parent has been directly charged with such an incident. The shooter's father is set to face a separate trial in March.

The prosecution contends that Jennifer Crumbley, aged 45, exhibited gross negligence regarding the risks her son presented before the shooting. They argue that there were evident signs of his mental instability and propensity for violence. Her son, who was 15 at the time, perpetrated the attack on November 30, 2021, resulting in the deaths of four students and injuries to seven others. He used a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, a gift from his father four days earlier for Christmas. The younger Crumbley has since pleaded guilty to all charges and received a life sentence without parole in December.

Crumbley has maintained that she was not fully aware of her son's mental health issues, with her defense portraying her as a flawed yet caring parent. If found guilty, Crumbley could face a sentence of up to 15 years.
