Today marks the commencement of the world's largest democratic elections in India, with nearly 1 billion eligible voters beginning to cast their votes. This extensive electoral exercise, spanning six weeks, will decide the future makeup of the 543-seat Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of parliament, which is instrumental in appointing the nation’s prime minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is vying for a third consecutive term. He faces opposition from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, a coalition of various parties. To secure governance for the next five years, a party or coalition needs at least 272 seats; the BJP secured 303 in the previous election. Voter concerns are heavily weighted towards economic issues like inflation and unemployment. Modi, aged 73, enjoys a robust approval rating of 75%, bolstered by his administration's focus on welfare initiatives and infrastructure enhancements.

Election proceedings are divided into seven phases to cover different regions, aimed at optimizing resource management, ensuring security, and maximizing voter participation. The electoral rules require that a polling station be accessible within 1.2 miles of every residence, even accommodating remote locations such as the highest polling booth in the Himalayas. The voting process is scheduled to conclude on June 1.

A Polish national was detained under suspicions of plotting to conduct espionage for Russian military intelligence, including an alleged scheme to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to statements from Polish prosecutors on Thursday.

He is charged with attempting to collude with Russian forces engaged in the Ukraine conflict and preparing to relay sensitive information regarding the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport's security protocols. This airport, located in southeastern Poland close to the Ukraine border, is a critical hub for international military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and often hosts visits from global leaders and politicians. Currently, it is secured by U.S. military forces.

The current spring homebuying season is experiencing a slow start, with challenges including high mortgage rates and increasing home prices affecting potential buyers.

According to the National Association of Realtors, sales of previously owned homes in the U.S. dropped by 4.3% in March from February, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.19 million. This decline marks the first decrease in sales since December, following a nearly 10% rise in February.

Year-over-year, existing home sales also saw a reduction of 3.7% compared to March of the previous year. Despite this, sales were slightly above expectations, surpassing the forecasted rate of 4.16 million according to FactSet.

An early-year decrease in mortgage rates had initially boosted home sales in January and February. However, rates began to increase again in February and March, impacting many home sales completed last month.
